A North Carolina community college instructor is being held in a Michigan prison for allegedly shooting her transgender brother's partner, ABC reports.

Julie Ann Hopwood, 56, reportedly drove 600 miles to wait for Amy Chesbro, 35, outside her workplace. Chesbro was shot five times on the morning of Dec. 16 and later died.
Chesbro was engaged to Hopwood's brother, PJ Redbird Tworavens. Police said that reports that Hopwood was displeased about her brother's decision to become a man are false. Chesbro and Tworavens had been a couple for ten years.
Hopwood previously taught respiratory therapy and psychology at Central Piedmont Community College in North Carolina, though she had been on an unexplained leave of absence. Students described her as "strict but kind."
Hopwood faces first-degree murder charges.
